Preservation and Innovation of Cultural Heritage

The global convergence of cultures has led to the decline of traditional cultures. Many intangible heritages are at risk of disappearing. Technology provides us with the opportunity to digitally preserve these intangible cultural heritages and to innovate their applications. Current mainstream concepts of cultural heritage preservation emphasize value-based creation, criticizing approaches that overly emphasize the material aspects of cultural heritage and neglect the spirit of intangible culture. Present research focuses more on the knowledge and value provided by cultural heritage, paying greater attention to embodied experiences and enhancing public awareness of it.

History of Budaixi

———————————————————————

Budaixi, which originated in the 17th century, was brought to Taiwan by immigrants from Fujian, China. Initially performed as part of religious rituals, Budaixi gradually gained popularity through public performances. The golden age of Budaixi occurred from the 1950s to the 1970s, when it became mainstream entertainment with the advent of television. Shows like Pili Budaixi became television sensations, propelling Budaixi into the mainstream. In recent decades, Budaixi has integrated modern technology, exploring new possibilities through innovation.

Intangible and Tangible Cultural Heritage

———————————————————————

Using Taiwan's local puppetry culture as an example, the culture encompasses a rich array of both tangible and intangible elements. Tangible materials include the stage, puppet heads, props, and costumes, while intangible elements include the vocal performances, music, and the master puppeteers' gestures—each a vital component of the cultural heritage. Our goal is to use technology to preserve this culture and ensure its sustainable development through digital cultural heritage initiatives and artistic performances.
